The Process Is More Technical Than Most People Think

The crew begins by troweling the finish onto the shell, then uses a process called wand washing to expose the pebbles beneath the surface. This step is what creates the signature texture and appearance.
After the first wash, the surface is hard troweled to compact and smooth the finish before being washed again. Timing is critical because different areas of the pool dry at different rates.
Crews also use compressed air, water wands, and even leaf blowers to remove excess material and prevent residue from drying onto the finish.
